If you have been following the saga of our gold fish, Nemo, then you are aware of the great lengths my husband has gone through to keep it alive. We bought a tank, air stone, special filters, a pump, special aloe treatment for the fins, aquarium salt, and filtered water. We also cleaned the tank once a week; I had no idea just how dirty gold fish can be! This morning I came downstairs and discovered my sweet nine year old sitting near the fish’s tank. He said, “Nemo’s dead!” He took it particularly hard because he won the fish for his little brother, and was also responsible for feeding the fish and cleaning the tank. It’s the first life lesson in what it feels like to lose something that you care about. Ironically, four year old Caden did not seem to mind that his fish was no longer alive. Instead, he asked if we could buy a Beta fish! It is always interesting to watch how kids deal with similar situations, neither right or wrong, just different!
Have your kids experienced the loss of a pet? If so, how did they handle it? Any advice?
