As part of the reward system in Caden’s preschool class, each child is allowed to bring home the class “pet” after consistently showing great behavior. The class pet just happens to be a stuffed elephant named, “Ellie!” Caden has been interested in Ellie sense he first heard about her! So over the weekend in honor of his great behavior, he was allowed to bring the stuffed animal home. He was pretty excited and spent the weekend in true four year fashion bringing his friend everywhere he went! The elephant took naps with him (I washed her in the washing machine beforehand), played games, read books, decorated Halloween cookies, went on a bike ride, and even had a picnic on the living room floor. Sadly, his big brother was fighting a high fever all weekend (thankfully he has made a full recovery), so we did not get to take Ellie to soccer, out to dinner, or to a friend’s birthday party! This morning Caden had a very hard time knowing that he would need to return his stuffed friend back to school for the next child to take home. He even remarked, “Maybe if I forget her in the car, I can keep her an extra day!” While I appreciated his honesty, I reminded him that he was given the responsibility to take care of Ellie, as well as return her so that another friend could do the same! Reluctantly he agreed! I also reminded him that if he continues to make good choices, then his class pet would be making another visit in the near future!
