I think at one point or another parents really wonder what is going on inside their child’s mind (in my experience this seems to happen in late elementary years). Lately Jacob has gone from the kid who wore short socks, long sleeved button up shirts, and jeans, to the boy who wants to wear long socks, shorts, and short sleeved shirts. In particular he wants to wear any type of athletic clothing, especially shorts! I get that we live in Florida where our temperatures rarely drop below 70 degrees, but after experiencing 90 degree temps, with high humidity, I consider 70 degrees cold! I honestly do not get that he wants to wear shorts and short sleeve shorts, and I really find it odd that he would like to wear long socks with his shorts. I mean, why not just wear pants?!? So I started to ask other moms and grandmothers at the boys’ school. I started to question and ask, “Can you believe that these boys like to wear shorts and long socks during the cooler temperatures?” I considered myself in touch with pop culture, but apparently I had missed the new trend! As a matter of fact when I asked the kindergarten secretary who is in her 60s, she informed me that the socks have a particular name, “stance socks!” She said that she often buys them for her grandson, and the more colorful and artistic, the better. After reading about stance socks, I came to realize that at a school where all of the kids have to wear uniforms, the socks allow them to express their individuality. Well, I felt really silly for objecting to my nine year old wearing (in my mind) ridiculously long socks with shorts when they are clearly what the cool kids are wearing! I officially feel uncool and slightly out of the loop.
Anyone else have a boy wearing the long colorful socks with shorts during the winter?
